Launch of Strengthening Independent Media in Moldova project

October 24th, 2014 - IREX Europe and its Moldovan partner organization Association of Independent TV journalists have launched a 24-month project to increase Moldovan media’s ability to provide unbiased and balanced coverage and to empower citizens to become more media literate.

On June 27th, 2014, Moldova signed the EU Association Agreement, including the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, which will help strengthen trade and political relations between Moldova and the EU. The signature of the agreement added to long-standing tensions between pro-Russian and pro-European Groups. With rumour and speculation rife, it is difficult for citizens to access quality and balanced information and judge what is reliable, especially as media is highly politicized.

IREX Europe will work with the Association of Independent Journalists (ATI), a leading Moldovan non-profit made up of journalists which seeks to produce hard-hitting investigative reports on “tough” issues such as corruption and EU integration, among others.

ATI will partner with regional journalists to produce 10 investigative reports on key EU and global issues. These productions will be broadcast on Moldova 1 TV channel, local television outlets, and disseminated through ATI’s weekly print magazine “Ziarul de Garda” and its online portal. The productions will then be shown in 24 local raions, giving citizens an opportunity to discuss directly with journalists the themes addressed during the productions. The productions and resulting discussions will help to disperse rumours and provide a more balanced view of the true benefits and challenges of EU accession. IREX Europe will also partner with librarians across the country to empower citizens to become more media literate.

The project will run from October 2014 – September 2016. To learn more, please visit: Strengthening Independent Media and Media Literacy in Moldova
