EHU pilots mutimedia summer camp

IREX Europe, BBC Media Action and the EHU Media Department have held the first ever "EHU journalism summer camp". 16 EHU students and young Belarusian journalists learned about multimedia journalism in Klaipeida, Lithuania from the 10th to the 19th of September during the EHU summer holidays. As part of the practical learning by doing teaching the students created a blog: Vagabond Media

The camp is part of the EU funded programme to modernize journalism education at the EHU: Media Education for Democracy . Training was provided by IREX Europe and BBC Media Action trainers in partnership with three Belarusian trainers from the EHU. The camp also included a guest lecture by a TUT.BY journalist. TUT.BY is the leading web portal in Belarus.

The camp gave students the opportunity to learn practical multimedia skills useful for their future careers as journalists. Subjects included:

- Introduction to media communication with a young audience
- Sound Recording and Editing using iPhones:
- Using Social media (Twitter, Facebook)
- Basic video sequences
- Camerawork and Final Cut Pro Editing:
- Basics of news reporting and packages:
- Shooting and editing packages:
- Planning a blog
- Using Email, Tumblr, YouTube, and Soundcloud
- Reporting safely in Belarus and running a news service:
- Writing about young Belarus

Mr. Ales Patapenka, the local trainer for the camp said, “Participants were self-motivated and attended the course with passion…participants became a team and successfully made a blog using multimedia skills” that they had learned. To see the summer school blog: Vagabond Media
