A Youth Group becomes a registered NGO in Tripoli, Lebanon through its involvement in the Youth Community Empowerment Program
A youth group named We Love Tripoli became an official NGO after its involvement in the Youth Community Empowerment Program implemented by IREX Europe in partnership with the local Lebanese NGO Nawha al Muwatiniya (Na-am). The project is funded by the Strategic Programme Fund of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. This project, since its debut in Lebanon in August 2008, has guided the We Love Tripoli youth group along many others through the different steps of a capacity building process. We Love Tripoli has evolved from being an unorganized youth group into a registered NGO with objective goals.
In September 2008, this group was chosen by the IREX Lebanon team to be part of its YCMP program and since then participated in all project activities. IREX and the Na-am team provided training expertise for We Love Tripoli and led many sessions on proposal writing and coached them through their internal capacity building activities.
The We Love Tripoli team was able to organize a Conflict Mitigation workshop in Tripoli and two of their board members attended a 3 days Training of Trainers (TOT) in December. Taha Naji, the group’s most active member, created a facebook group named Broumana early December 2008intended to keep all the YCEP TOT attendees linked together as activists in civil society.
In March 2008, We Love Tripoli became registered as an NGO and submitted a project proposal with a very high cost share intended to heop the youth in Tripoli become more involved in volunteerism activities of their town.
We Love Tripoli stood out because of its rapid growth and successful activities. The group’s board member Taha Naji said, “We thank the IREX team for its daily work with us because without its continuous full support, We Love Tripoli would have remained an unreachable dream for years”.
IREX Europe intends to continue building the capacity of this newly established NGO as well as eight other youth CSOs through its YCMP project and will be funding five to eight projects presented by the involved groups. It will also be helping We Love Tripoli and the other groups implement their projects and offer its expertise to guide them through this process.
